Duart Castle stands on a clifftop at the eastern tip of the Isle of Mull, commanding the Sound of Mull, the strait separating Mull from the Scottish mainland. Lachlan Lubanach received the first known charter for Duart in 1390 as part of his marriage to a daughter of the Lord of the Isles, and from that foundation the Macleans built a formidable power base across the Hebrides, holding lands in Mull, Tiree, Islay, Jura and beyond by the end of the 15th century. The castle was lost to the Campbell Earl of Argyll in 1674 following a long feud that left the clan heavily in debt, but in 1911 the chief Fitzroy MacLean reacquired and restored it, and it remains with the Maclean family today. Photographer Aly Wight photographed Duart Castle for the Clanscape series on Maclean heritage.
If the name Maclean belongs to your family, this fortress at the edge of the Sound of Mull has been your clan's anchor for more than six hundred years.
