What is the Clan Kerr Connection to Floors Castle?
Floors Castle, near Kelso in the Borders of Scotland, is a grand testament to the historical prominence of Clan Kerr. This imposing mansion, the largest inhabited house in Scotland, was built in 1721 for John Kerr, the 1st Duke of Roxburghe. The Kerrs, known for their support of the Union of Parliaments in 1707, saw Floors Castle as a symbol of their status and influence.
The castle, with its towered and turreted central block, is a remarkable architectural feat designed by William Adam. It was later remodelled by William Playfair in the 1830s, adding a profusion of spires and domes that further enhanced its grandeur. The castle, set in beautifully landscaped parkland, is said to incorporate parts of an old tower house, a property of the Kerrs of Cessford, which was burnt by the English in 1545.
Floors Castle has been the seat of the Kerr family for centuries, witnessing key events and hosting notable figures in its rich history. It was even used as a filming location for the 1984 film "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes". Today, the castle is owned by Guy Innes-Ker, the 10th Duke of Roxburghe, continuing the long-standing connection of Clan Kerr to this magnificent mansion.
If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Kerr or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Floors Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
