What is the Clan Kerr Connection to Ferniehirst Castle?

Ferniehirst Castle, situated in the Scottish Borders, is a historic stronghold with deep ties to Clan Kerr. The castle is located near Jedburgh, very close to the border with England. The original structure was built in the late 15th century, and it became a significant stronghold for the Kerrs, a clan known for their unique tradition of left-handed warriors. This peculiarity is reflected in the castle's design, with its spiral staircase designed to give a left-handed swordsman the advantage.

Throughout its history, Ferniehirst Castle has been a site of conflict and power struggles. It was repeatedly attacked and rebuilt during the Anglo-Scottish Wars. The Kerrs were known for their fierce loyalty to Mary, Queen of Scots, and the castle served as a refuge for her and her followers during the turbulent times of her reign.

One of the most notable figures in Clan Kerr's history, Sir Thomas Kerr of Ferniehirst, played a crucial role in the 16th century during the reign of James VI. He was appointed Warden of the Middle Marches, a position of significant power and responsibility, reflecting the influence and respect the Kerrs held during this period.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Kerr or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Ferniehirst Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
