What is the Clan Johnstone Connection to Moffat Water?

The Moffat Water Valley, located in Dumfries and Galloway, is a breathtaking landscape close to the historical territory of Clan Johnstone. Although not directly tied to specific events in the clan's history, the valley's beauty and its proximity to Johnstone lands mean it would have been a familiar place to Clan Johnstone and their kin.

Clan Johnstone, known for their resilience and strength, were influential in the border region of Scotland. Their main seat was at Lochwood Tower, not far from this valley.

The Johnstones were renowned for their fierce resistance against border reivers, lawless raiders who operated along the Anglo-Scottish border during the late medieval and early modern periods, and played a crucial role in maintaining the peace and stability of the region.

The hills on either side of the valley form part of the Southern Uplands and help to shepherd the meandering Moffat Water down towards Moffat. As it flows down this valley, it meets the Annan water and cuts through the heart of Johnstone territory. In our landscape photography print, the valley is bathed in the soft light of sunrise on a winter morning and offers a serene and captivating view that reflects the tranquil beauty of this part of Scotland.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Johnstone or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Moffat Water Valley provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
