Halberry Castle once stood on a coastal promontory above the north sea near Wick, one of several strongholds the Gunns held along the Caithness coast in the medieval period. Records of the castle are sparse, noting only that it was held by the clan and that some remains survive at the cliff edge, but what surrounds it is the same rugged, windswept coastline that shaped a family known for holding on in one of Scotland's most exposed and demanding landscapes. Photographer Aly Wight made the journey to find it and shot this aerial photograph that shows the precariousness and drama of Clan Gunn's territory.
If the Gunn name is in your family, this Caithness coastline is part of the country your ancestors called their own.
