Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Drumlanrig Castle, the great pink sandstone mansion in the hills of Dumfries and Galloway. The Douglases held land here from the fourteenth century, and in 1679 William Douglas, Duke of Queensberry, began building the house that stands today. It took a decade to complete and produced one of the most ambitious private residences in Scotland. Where the Black Douglases had built fortresses to project military power, Drumlanrig was something different. It was a statement of wealth, taste, and permanence in the Lowlands.
If you carry the Douglas name, Drumlanrig is what the clan built when the age of castles gave way to the age of great houses.
