Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Douglas Castle, the place that gave the clan its name, in a Lanarkshire valley that has been Douglas territory since the twelfth century. It was here in 1307, while Scotland was fighting to free itself from English occupation, that Sir James Douglas retook the castle from its garrison in a raid so daring the English called it Douglas's Larder. His bravery made him the closest captain of King Robert the Bruce, and the castle became the seat of one of the most powerful families in medieval Scotland.
If you carry the Douglas name, this valley is where the story of that name was first written.
