Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Mingary Castle on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, one of the most remote corners of the Scottish mainland. The Campbells acquired this sea-girt fortress from the MacIans of Ardnamurchan, extending their influence far beyond their Argyll heartland to the very tip of the west coast. Holding Mingary meant controlling the sea approaches between the Sound of Mull and the open Atlantic. It was never an easy place to keep, fought over repeatedly during the seventeenth century civil wars, but the Campbells held on.
If you carry the Campbell name, Mingary shows just how far that name reached along the Atlantic edge of Scotland.
