Photographer Aly Wight photographed Kilchurn Castle in winter, framing the ruined tower through a grove of twisted, leafless trees with a snow-capped mountain rising behind it and a narrow strip of Loch Awe visible between the trunks. The bare branches and frost-bleached grass give the image a raw, atmospheric quality that feels in keeping with the castle's history. The Campbells of Glenorchy built Kilchurn on lands that once belonged to the MacGregors, and Sir Duncan Campbell, known as Black Duncan of the Seven Castles, strengthened and expanded it in the late 1500s. The name was earned, as he was responsible for building or improving castles at Kilchurn, Achallader, Loch Dochart, Finlarig, Balloch, and Edinample. The Campbells lived here until 1740 before moving east to Taymouth. Kilchurn was garrisoned during the 1745 Jacobite Rising and then left to the weather.

If you carry the Campbell name, Kilchurn is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the Highlands, and it carries your clan's name in its stones.
