From above, Castle Campbell appears almost hidden, a ruined tower rising from a dense canopy of forest with the smooth green hills of the Ochils sweeping up behind. Photographer Aly Wight captured this aerial view of the castle in Dollar Glen, and the height of the shot reveals how completely nature has reclaimed the landscape around it. Before the Campbells arrived, this was Castle Gloom, standing where the Burns of Care and Sorrow meet in the glen below. Colin Campbell, the first Earl of Argyll and Lord High Chancellor of Scotland, acquired it through marriage to a Stewart heiress and had Parliament rename it in 1489. It became the family's Lowland power base, a foothold close to the Scottish court while their main strength lay far to the west in Argyll.
If you carry the Campbell name, Castle Campbell is where the clan's Highland roots met Lowland ambition, and the name on the walls is yours.
