Photographer Aly Wight captured Duntrune Castle from directly above, the grey stone tower sitting on a rocky headland almost encircled by the still waters of Loch Crinan, with wooded slopes and open hills stretching behind.
The MacDougalls built Duntrune in the thirteenth century, one of several castles they raised across Argyll as Lords of Lorn. Descended from Somerled's son Dougall, their power rested on controlling the sea routes of the west coast, and Duntrune sat at a key point on Loch Crinan. A feud with Robert the Bruce cost them most of their lands, which passed to the Campbells. Duntrune went with them. But it was the MacDougalls that established this stunning-looking and strategically placed castle.
If your name is MacDougall, this is one of the territories where your ancestors held power in Argyll.
