Photographer Aly Wight captured this view across the golden waters of Oban Bay at sunset, looking toward Dunollie on its wooded headland. The old tower still rises above the trees, its silhouette unchanged against a sky that burns above the hills of Argyll.
For six centuries, Dunollie was the chief seat of the MacDougalls, who ruled this western coastline as Lords of Lorn. Their most famous story came from an ambush in 1306, when Robert the Bruce fled through MacDougall territory and was intercepted in the hills above Tyndrum. He escaped, but it is said the brooch from his cloak was left behind on the hillside. The MacDougalls kept it as a trophy at Dunollie, and it has been known ever after as the Brooch of Lorn.
If your name is MacDougall, your ancestors were once the dominant lords of this coast. The Brooch of Lorn is still with the family today.
