The site of Gunn's Castle, also known as Clyth Castle, occupies a headland above the sea south-west of Wick in Caithness, and it was the principal seat of one of Scotland's most independent clans. The 15th-century chief George Gunn, who served as coroner of the county, held court here in a manner said to rival any Highland chief in the region, and the castle stood at the centre of the Gunns' bitter feud with the Keiths of Ackergill, rivals who challenged the clan for territory and whose attack on Gunn's daughter sparked decades of bloodshed. The chief and four of his sons were killed in the battles at Tannach Moor in 1438 and Dirlot in 1464. Almost nothing of the castle survives above ground today. Photographer Aly Wight went to find what the headland still holds.
If you carry the Gunn name, this cliff above the Caithness sea is where your clan had its greatest presence.
