Photographer Aly Wight captured Mains Castle in warm evening light, the sandstone tower glowing amber against a canopy of spring leaves. The gently mounded ground in the foreground hints at the earthworks that once helped defend this seat above Dundee.
The Grahams built this tower house in the 1530s, after acquiring land previously held by the Douglas Earls of Angus. It was their seat in Angus for sixty years, until its last Graham laird, Sir David Graham, was executed in around 1592 for conspiring to restore Catholicism to Scotland. The castle passed out of Graham hands with him.
If your name is Graham, this castle is the perfect glimpse of what home looked like for your ancestors.
