What is the Clan Fraser of Lovat Connection to Erchless Castle?

Erchless Castle, located near the intersection of Strathfarrar and Strathglass in the Scottish Highlands, is a site of historical significance for Clan Fraser of Lovat. This L-shaped tower house, controlling two vital routes into the Ross highlands, has seen many transformations over the centuries.

Originally granted to the Bisset family in 1211, the castle's ownership evolved through complex inheritances. In 1539, the castle was granted to Hugh Fraser, 3rd Lord Lovat, marking the beginning of the Fraser of Lovat's connection to Erchless.

During the Fraser's possession, the castle became a symbol of their influence in the region. However, in 1594, the 6th Lord Lovat granted the lands back to the Chisholm family.

The castle's history also intertwines with the Jacobite uprisings, and architectural changes reflect its evolving role.

If you are considering a landscape photograph of Scotland that celebrates your connection to Clan Fraser of Lovat, this print of Erchless Castle provides a stunning view, taking in the glorious beauty of Erchless Castle's setting.

Where is Erchless Castle?

Erchless Castle is in the Beauly area of the Highlands region.
