What is the Clan Forbes Connection to Corgarff Castle?

Corgarff Castle, nestled in the Cairngorms National Park within the Grampian Mountains, is a symbol of Clan Forbes' rich history. This 16th-century tower house, surrounded by wild moorland and the muscular Cairngorm landscape, is enclosed by a defensive star-shaped perimeter wall known as a "star fort."

The castle's distinct appearance, with its star fort added in the 18th century for defence, reflects the military importance of the location. However, it's the connection to Clan Forbes that truly enriches its story.

Known for their courage and loyalty, Clan Forbes were once deeply connected to Corgarff Castle. During the 16th century, the castle was attacked and burned by Adam Gordon, a rival from Clan Gordon, marking a tragic chapter in Clan Forbes' history. In all, 27 people perished, including Margaret Forbes, the laird's wife.

The Forbeses of Corgarff occupied the castle from the mid-1500s until it was abandoned in the 1600s. The castle was later used by the Marquis of Montrose in 1645, set on fire by Jacobites in 1689 and 1690, and transformed into a barracks in the mid-1700s.

Corgarff Castle's history also includes a brief period as a legal distillery in the 1820s, and its unique appearance and strategic location continue to symbolise the enduring legacy of Clan Forbes in Scotland's history.
