What is the Clan Carmichael Connection to Carmichael House?

Carmichael House, now a roofless ruin, whispers stories of a bygone era in the heart of South Lanarkshire. Its towering walls, stripped of the roof, still speak to the grandeur that once symbolized Clan Carmichael's status. The Carmichaels have been settled in the upper ward of Lanarkshire for over nine hundred years, taking their name from the lands of Carmichael. Originally part of the Dougsdale territory granted to Clan Douglas by Robert the Bruce in 1321, the lands of Carmichael saw various transitions within the family until Sir John de Carmichael received a charter for the lands between 1374 and 1384 from William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas, a reward for his prowess and loyalty to the Douglases. In 1414, the barony of Carmichael was confirmed to the chief of the clan, extending over fourteen thousand acres in the parishes of Carmichael, Pettinain, and Carluke.

From the first castle built in 1414 to the destruction by Cromwell in 1650, the Carmichaels played vital roles in Scottish history. They held high offices, fought in significant battles like Baugé, and took part in royal negotiations. The grand mansion was a testament to the family's status and resilience.

If you are considering a landscape photograph of Scotland that celebrates your connection to Clan Carmichael, this print of Carmichael House provides a stunning view of the once grand mansion. Carmichael House is an important symbol and central to the story of Clan Carmichael.
