Photographer Aly Wight took this aerial photograph of Duntrune Castle on its rocky headland at the mouth of Loch Crinan, the ancient walls rising from the rock with water on nearly every side. The castle sits almost like an island here, a small jetty reaching out into the loch and the warm evening light catching the wooded hills that stretch north behind it. The Campbells of Duntrune held this castle for centuries, and it saw real violence during the civil wars of the 1640s. After the Battle of Inverlochy in 1645, forces loyal to the Marquis of Montrose swept through Campbell territory, and Duntrune was besieged by Alasdair Colkitto MacDonald. The castle survived that assault but was burned by the Earl of Argyll himself during his ill-fated rebellion in 1685. Local legend says a ghostly piper still haunts the ruins, his fingers cut off for trying to warn the Campbells of an approaching attack.
If you carry the Campbell name, Duntrune is a reminder that holding Argyll came at a cost, and the Campbells held on longer than most.
