What is the Clan Campbell Connection to Duntrune Castle?

Duntrune Castle, standing on the north side of Loch Crinan in Argyll, is a fortified structure that began as a MacDougall stronghold in the 13th century. With its stone walls and towers overlooking the tranquil waters, the castle paints an impressive picture.

Originally built by the MacDougall clan, Duntrune Castle was eventually taken by Clan Campbell, beginning a substantial connection to the clan in the 17th century. The Campbells of Duntrune made it an essential residence, serving both as a stronghold and a reflection of their growing prominence in the region.

The castle has witnessed significant events, including a siege by rival MacDonalds under Alasdair Mac Colla in 1644, after the Battle of Inverlochy. It was burnt by the Earl of Argyll in 1685. In 1792, the lands were sold to the Malcolms of Poltalloch, who’s descendants still own the castle today.

Adding to the intrigue, the castle is said to be haunted by a ghostly piper, who had his finger chopped off.

If you are considering a landscape photograph of Scotland that celebrates your connection to Clan Campbell, this print of Duntrune Castle provides a stunning view that takes in the beauty of Loch Crinan's setting. Duntrune Castle is an important symbol and central to the story of Clan Campbell.

Where is Duntrune Castle?
