Photographer Aly Wight captured Clackmannan Tower from the meadow below, framed by summer trees above a foreground of wild cow parsley. Warm evening light catches the sandstone, giving the old stonework an amber glow against a luminous sky.
The Bruces came to Clackmannan in the fourteenth century as a reward. Thomas Bruce, a kinsman of the royal house, helped lead a rising against English occupation in the west of Scotland, and received Crown lands here as his portion. The family held the tower for more than four hundred years. By 1787, Catherine Bruce was still keeping the sword of Robert the Bruce, and when Robert Burns came to visit she used it to knight him, in a ceremony she believed no other living hand had the right to perform.
If your name is Bruce, your ancestors held this tower for more than four hundred years.
