What is the Clan Turnbull Connection to Fatlips castle?

Perched atop Minto Crags, Fatlips Castle offers a sweeping view over Teviotdale and beyond, towards the English border. This iconic Borders Tower has had various names over the years, but it's most affectionately known as Fatlips Castle. The Turnbulls, a clan of border reivers, have been connected to this site since the mid-1300s. Walter Turnbull received a charter for the barony of Minto from King David II in 1375, and his son John built the first tower on this spot towards the end of the 1300s.

The tower served as a lookout, using bonfires to signal impending danger to Bedrule Castle across the River Teviot. In 1545, the castle was destroyed by Lord Hertford, sent by England's King Henry VIII, who was keen on securing Mary Queen of Scots' betrothal to his son. The castle was restored in 1857 and again in 2013, capturing the essence of its rich history.

The castle's strategic location and its role in the Turnbull clan's history make it a compelling subject for a landscape photography print.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Turnbull or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Fatlips Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
