What is the Clan Rait Connection to Rait Castle?

Rait Castle, located in the Scottish Highlands, has a rich and dramatic history tied to Clan Rait. Originally a property of the Comyn family, who took the name of de Rait, the castle has since seen ownership by various families, including the Mackintoshes and the Campbells.

The castle's history is marked by a tragic event in 1442 when a feast between the de Rait family and the Mackintoshes ended in a massacre. The laird's daughter, blamed for the incident, met a gruesome end, and her ghost, said to be without hands, is believed to haunt the castle to this day.

Rait Castle also has connections to significant historical events, such as the Battle of Culloden in 1746, when the Duke of Cumberland is said to have stayed there.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Rait or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Rait Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
