Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Bothwell Castle, one of the largest stone castles in Scotland, sitting above the River Clyde just south of Glasgow. The castle had been held by English forces during Scotland's Wars of Independence, and when Archibald the Grim, third Earl of Douglas, acquired it in 1362 he set about rebuilding and strengthening it as a Black Douglas seat. The Douglases held Bothwell for nearly a century before it was swept up in the fall of the Black Douglas family in 1455, when their lands and titles were stripped by King James II.
If you carry the Douglas name, Bothwell is part of the story of just how high, and then how hard, that family fell.
