Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Castle Sinclair Girnigoe on the Caithness coast near Wick, one of the most northerly castle ruins in mainland Scotland. The Sinclairs came to Scotland from Normandy in the 1100s and rose fast. Henry Sinclair became the first Earl of Orkney in 1379, and the family's reach stretched from Roslin near Edinburgh to the far tip of Caithness. William Sinclair, second Earl of Caithness, built this fortress in the late 1400s to command the north.
If you carry the Sinclair name, Girnigoe is where your clan planted its flag at the edge of Scotland. Not many families made it this far north and held on.
