What is the Clan MacInnes Connection to Kinlochaline Castle?

Kinlochaline Castle, standing at the head of Loch Aline in the Scottish Highlands, has a captivating connection to Clan MacInnes. This 15th-century tower house, also known as Caisteal an Ime (Scottish Gaelic for Castle of Butter), is wrapped in both history and legend.

The castle's walls, made of rare sandstone and an impressive 10-foot-thick, were constructed in a strategic location for coastal defence. But what makes Kinlochaline Castle truly unique is a charming tale involving a Lady of Clan MacInnes, known as Dubh Chal (Lady of the Black Veil). According to the story, she paid the builder with butter equal to the volume of the castle, a whimsical detail that adds to the castle's allure.

Throughout its history, the castle faced turmoil, including being burned in 1644 during a period of civil war and later attacked in a feud in 1679. Abandoned for centuries, it was lovingly restored in the late 1990s and is now a residence.

If you're considering a landscape photography print of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan MacInnes or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Kinlochaline Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
