What is the Clan Livingstone Connection to Isle of Lismore?

The Isle of Lismore, one of the Inner Hebridean islands, is located in the area of Lorn, off the west coast of Scotland. With its rugged landscapes and ancient ruins, the island holds deep significance for the Highland branch of Clan Livingstone, known by the Gaelic name MacLeay.

Unlike the Lowland Livingstones, who trace their lineage to West Lothian, the Highland Livingstones claim a different origin. Their original Gaelic name was MacLeay, derived from "Mac an Leigh" (son of the physician) or MacDhunnshleibhe (son of Dunsleve). In the 17th century, the MacLeays adopted the name Livingstone, a transition that marked a new chapter in their history.

The Highland Livingstones were hereditary Keepers of the crozier of the Bishops of Lismore, a symbol of religious authority. They received grants of land in Lismore and the title of Barons of Bachyll. Another branch of the clan became followers of the Stewarts of Appin, and they were known for their bravery, particularly during the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

The Isle of Lismore is a place where history and heritage intertwine. From the ruins of Achanduin Castle, where James Livingston of Stirling resided, to the ancient Cathedral of St. Moluag, the island offers a tangible connection to the past.

Whether you identify with the Highland or Lowland branch of Clan Livingstone, our landscape photography print captures the wild beauty of this unique location.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Livingstone or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of the Isle of Lismore provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
