What is the Clan Erskine Connection to Kellie Castle?

Nestled in the scenic East Neuk of Fife, Kellie Castle stands as a remarkably well-preserved tower house with a connection to a member of the noble Erskine family, and a sad tale of another Erskine who apparently haunts the castle to this day.

This stunningly preserved tower house, dating from the sixteenth century, is a striking architectural marvel. Kellie Castle's magnificent walled garden, laid out with ancient roses, adds to its charm and allure. To this day, it is kept in pristine condition by the National Trust for Scotland, offering a perfect portal to the past.

The castle's history is rich and complex, having been held by the Siwards and the Oliphants before being sold to a prominent member of the noble Erskine family, Sir Thomas Erskine of Gogar, in 1613. A favourite of James VI, he was made Earl of Kellie. Sir Thomas was apparently involved in the Gowrie conspiracy, a complex and intriguing event that demonstrates the ruthlessness of nobles and monarchy of the time. Perhaps the Earldom was a reward for his loyalty to the king.

Kellie Castle's intrigue includes a spectral presence, adding an otherworldly dimension to its legacy. Anne Erskine, a tragic figure associated with the castle, met a sorrowful end, falling from an upstairs window. Unexplained footsteps are sometimes heard running up a stair in the castle, leaving an eerie imprint on the place.

After being abandoned in 1829, the castle was bought and restored by James Lorimer in 1878. His son, Sir Robert Lorimer, a renowned architect, further contributed to the castle's historical significance, enhancing its place in Scotland's heritage.

If you are considering a landscape photograph of Scotland that celebrates your connection to Clan Erskine, this print of Kellie Castle provides a stunning view that takes in the glorious beauty of Kellie Castle's setting.
