What is the Clan Elliot Connection to Fatlips Castle?

Fatlips Castle, perched atop Minto Crags in the Scottish Borders, is a site that resonates with the history of Clan Eliott. The castle's peculiar name is said to have originated from the custom of the members of the house giving a 'hearty welcome' to guests.

The castle was acquired by Sir Gilbert Elliot in 1705, whose family eventually became the Earls of Minto. It was extensively restored in 1857, while the interior was renovated by Sir Robert Lorimer in 1897–8 as a shooting lodge and private museum. The building was in use until the 1960s. In mid-2013, the cap-house, parapet, and roof were successfully renovated.

Now restored to some of it's former glory, Fatlips Castle stands as a symbol of Clan Eliott's enduring legacy, offering a glimpse into their past.

If you are considering a landscape photograph of Scotland that celebrates your connection to Clan Eliott, this print of Fatlips Castle provides a stunning view that takes in the glorious beauty of Fatlips Castle's setting.

Where is Fatlips Castle?
