What is the Clan Calder Connection to Cawdor Castle?
A regal gem in the Scottish Highlands, Cawdor Castle is renowned for its fascinating history, stunning gardens, and famous literary connections. Mentioned in William Shakespeare's play "Macbeth", the castle is nestled amidst lush gardens and majestic forests in Nairnshire. Nevertheless, the true story of the castle is intrinsically linked with Clan Calder.
Cawdor Castle, erected in the 14th century, stands as a proud testament to Clan Calder's prominence and ambition. The castle was under the Calder's control for almost three centuries until a dramatic event changed its course in the 16th century.
The castle's history turned when young heiress Muriel Calder was abducted and forced into marriage with Sir John Campbell, the Earl of Argyll's son, at merely twelve years old. This act marked the castle's transition into Campbell hands.
The Calders pursued Muriel's captors, leading to a grim consequence for Campbell of Inverliver, who had masterminded the abduction. All six of his sons, who were involved in the kidnapping, were killed by the Calders. Despite the castle's takeover, the Calders inflicted a significant blow on the Campbells, a testament to their resolve.
Even after centuries of separation, the castle is hallowed ground for members of Clan Calder, it's an enduring symbol of their ancestor's footprint on the landscape of Scottish history.
If you are considering a landscape photography print of Scotland that celebrates your connection to Clan Calder, this print of Cawdor Castle captures the grandeur and timeless beauty of this historic site.
