What is the Clan Scott Connection to Newark Castle?

Newark Tower, a prominent, ruined tower house in Selkirkshire, Scotland, shares a deep connection with Clan Scott. Constructed around 1423 and finished by 1475, the tower initially belonged to Archibald Douglas, Earl of Wigtown, before becoming a royal possession.

The tower's link to Clan Scott was solidified when Sir Walter Scott of Branxholme became its Keeper and Captain in 1573. The Scotts were a key family in the region, and the tower was central to their history, particularly during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. This conflict, fought between 1639 and 1651, involved battles across Scotland, England, and Ireland, as royalists and parliamentarians clashed over governance and religious freedom.

In the late 17th century, the tower was modified for Anne Scott, 1st Duchess of Buccleuch. It was also visited by the renowned writer Sir Walter Scott, who drew inspiration from the tower for his narrative poem, "The Lay of the Last Minstrel." This poem tells the tale of an old minstrel who recounts a historic feud between two border families, weaving in supernatural elements and romantic intrigue.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Scott or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Newark Tower provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
