What is the Clan MacDougall Connection to Castle Stalker?
Castle Stalker, standing on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, is a picturesque tower house that captures the essence of Scotland's western coast. The site's history begins with the MacDougalls, who were once Lords of Lorn and built a fortalice (a small fortified building) around 1320.
The MacDougalls were descended from Somerled, the legendary Norse-Gaelic leader, and became Lords of Lorn in the 12th century. They lost their title after defeat by King Bruce in 1308 but regained it for a period after 1328. The fortalice served as a vital stronghold for the clan during this time.
In about 1388, the Lordship of Lorn passed to the Stewarts, who constructed the tower house that stands today. Despite the change in ownership, Castle Stalker's connection to the MacDougalls remains a significant part of its history.
The castle's isolated location and stunning surroundings, along with its rich history, make it a symbol of Scotland's past and the MacDougalls' enduring legacy in the region.
If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan MacDougall or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Castle Stalker provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
